Description
Introduction
The Accessible Reading Edition: The Analects is a book that records the words and deeds of Confucius, as well as the words and deeds of some of Confucius' students. Ban Gu's Book of Han: Records of Arts and Literature says: "The Analects is the words that Confucius answered his disciples, his contemporaries, and the words that his disciples heard from him. At that time, each disciple had his own record. After the death of the Master, his disciples compiled and discussed the words, so it is called The Analects." The Selected Works of Literature: Commentary on the Theory of Debate on Fate also quotes Fu Zi, saying: "After the death of Zhongni, his disciples discussed the words of the Master, and called it The Analects." From these two passages, we get two concepts: (1) The "lun" in "lunyu" means "discuss" and the "yu" in "lunyu" means "language". The "lunyu" means "discuss" the words heard from the Master. (2) The name "lunyu" existed at that time and was not given to it later by others.
