About this book

In this turbulent era, Chen Yingzhen's power as a universal ideological resource is even more significant. Whether it is his humanitarianism and internationalism, or his recognition and care for the Third World, they are all spiritual resources that are urgently needed under the pressure of so-called capitalist globalization. This book invites thinkers from East Asia to reopen the discussion on Chen Yingzhen's thoughts and literature, freeing them from the existing cognitive framework and revealing their openness, heterogeneity, and their inherent high vitality.

The "Chen Ying-zhen: Thought and Literature" academic conference was held at the National Chiao Tung University from November 20 to 21, 2009. It invited representative critics, writers and scholars from the ideological circles of South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, mainland China and Taiwan. In five sessions, namely "Literary History", "Thought", "Writers' Forum", "Practice" and "Third World", they conducted critical discussions and dialogues on the reflective connotations of Chen Ying-zhen's thoughts and literary practice, its relationship with the history of modern Chinese literature, its influence on creation and the ideological world, and its understanding of the knowledge and spiritual conditions in Asia and the Third World. The conference ended with a "comprehensive discussion". It took two years to finalize and edit the book after the conference. In addition to including 24 papers and 6 conference discussion records, it also uses the valuable speech of Mr. Chen Mingzhong, a veteran left-wing figure in Taiwan, at the opening of the conference as a prologue, thus compiling a complete collection of papers from the conference.

The book "Chen Yingzhen: Thought and Literature" will play a role of inheriting the past and ushering in the future in the "Chen Yingzhen Research" and will be an important reference document for future "Chen Yingzhen Research". It is hoped that through more in-depth research on Chen Yingzhen, this most important and unavoidable thinker in Taiwan's post-war period will continue to become a shared ideological resource for both sides of the Taiwan Strait, the Chinese-speaking world, Asia, the Third World, and even the world.
