Description
Introduction · · · · · ·
1. [Beautiful Dunhuang] Long years and magnificent imagination. The Dunhuang Grottoes not only carry the essence of Chinese traditional culture, but also shine with the light of the world's diverse civilizations. The Mogao Grottoes have 45,000 square meters of murals, 735 caves, and more than 2,400 colored sculptures, witnessing the beauty of time that shocks the soul.
2. [Unparalleled Art] 366 days, unfolding a real-life tour of the Dunhuang Caves on paper, guarding the historical traces of wind and sand baptism. The murals collected date from the Northern Dynasties to the Yuan Dynasty, some are simple and unrestrained, some are calm and gorgeous, some are dignified and realistic, and some are mysterious and romantic, carrying more than a thousand years of memories.
3. [The Beauty of Traditional Culture] One picture a day, selected and interpreted by experts. The artistic characteristics and traditional culture of Dunhuang come alive on paper. From the fashion of wide-sleeved and wide-belted clothes, interlaced skirts, and double buns, to the cross-collared half-arms, step-shaking flower ornaments, and swan buns, we can see the changes in traditional clothing and makeup; from the hip roof, the herringbone roof, and the flat chessboard on the cave roof, to the pagoda bell tower, the waterside pavilion and lotus pond, we can see the evolution of architecture through the dynasties; from steaming cakes and stirring spoons, boiling wine and drinking tea, to traveling in the mountains and children playing, we can see the fireworks of thousands of families and the leisure of the world. Turning the pages reflects the beauty of culture.
4. [Tribute to the Guardians] "History is fragile because it is written on paper and painted on walls; history is also strong because there are always people willing to protect the truth of history and hope that it will never be erased." The calendar selects 15 mural copies by old gentlemen who came to Mogao Grottoes between 1943 and 1964. It is intended to pay tribute to the noble spirit of the predecessors who protected the Dunhuang Grottoes, and to inspire future generations to carry forward the cause of protecting Dunhuang.
4. [Good luck and good fortune] The Dragon King sends blessings, auspicious clouds and auspicious air, good weather and good harvests, and benefits all living things. The Dragon Year Calendar specially includes 19 dragon element murals: Five hundred blue dragons attending a party, dragons floating in the clouds, immortals riding dragons and controlling the wind, the dragon-headed rain god spits out clouds and rains, the dragon-body Fuxi guards the pearl, and the nine dragons are crowned with auspicious signs... Peace and prosperity, long-lasting happiness and worry-free.
5. [Free and Easy Mood] With a happy mood, feel the flow of the four seasons with the calendar: green grass, moon over the mountains, frosty autumn morning, snowy morning and moonlit evening. It can be spread out 180 degrees, and the blank space is suitable for daily records. One day at a time, the years leave traces, leaving a quiet and clean place for life.
6. [Collection Gift] The overall design is done by the award-winning designer of "China's Most Beautiful Book". Hardcover with a special protective box. The cover is made of high-grade fine sandpaper, which looks like the rough touch of a rock wall, and the details of the hot stamping process outline the charm. Hand-mounted, with cloth pasted on the spine, continuing the craftsman tradition. The inner pages are made of art paper, with clear printing and comfortable reading. Two Dragon Year Sending Treasures and Welcoming Blessings Cards are given as gifts, wishing you good health and well-being.
===========================================================
The Dunhuang calendar produced by the Dunhuang Academy welcomes you to the Year of the Dragon in 2024.
Step into the boundless historical galaxy and artistic time and space, and observe up close 309 real-life murals and 57 expert-copied and restored works selected from the vast treasures every day. The calendar roughly divides the Dunhuang Grottoes into four stages: the Sixteen Kingdoms and the Northern Dynasties, the Sui Dynasty to the High Tang Dynasty, the Middle and Late Tang Dynasty, and the Five Dynasties to the Yuan Dynasty, corresponding to the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter respectively. The traces left by the long river of history in the grottoes show the passage of time, and also make the characteristics of the grottoes in different periods more prominent. Each season selects donors of different social status, gender, and age, and from their perspective, uses vivid murals and easy-to-understand explanations to show the food, clothing, housing, music, dance, entertainment, and spiritual beliefs of each historical period. Tell stories with cultural relics to make history alive again.
2024 marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Dunhuang Research Institute. The calendar also selects mural copies of 15 old gentlemen who came to the Mogao Grottoes between 1943 and 1964, in order to pay tribute to the noble spirit of the predecessors in protecting the Dunhuang Grottoes, and to inspire future generations to carry forward the cause of Dunhuang protection.
Time is long and imagination is magnificent. For 366 days, we will integrate our love for Dunhuang into our daily life and illuminate our lives with the beauty of Dunhuang.

The Dunhuang Academy is a comprehensive research institution responsible for the management of the world cultural heritage sites of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, Tianshui Maijishan Grottoes, Yongjing Bingling Temple Grottoes, and the national key cultural relics protection sites of Guazhou Yulin Grottoes, Dunhuang West Thousand Buddha Caves, and Qingyang North Grottoes Temple. Its predecessor was the National Dunhuang Art Institute established in 1944, renamed the Dunhuang Cultural Relics Institute in 1950, and expanded to the Dunhuang Academy in 1984. At the 34th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Brazil in 2010, the Mogao Grottoes were praised as "a model of effective protection and sustainable tourism management methods". Following the working principle of "protection, research, and promotion", generations of Mogao Grottoes people "choose one thing and spend their whole lives", overcome difficulties, forge ahead, and forge the "Mogao spirit" of "sticking to the desert, being willing to make sacrifices, being brave to take responsibility, and pioneering and enterprising".
