For most people, geometry is a course full of boring and stereotyped exercises. Once you graduate from high school, it will be thrown into the "archival pile" along with your braces and the pop songs you once followed. When you think of geometry, if the first thing you think of is how to prove an obvious property of a triangle through a series of steps, then this is not geometry, but only a small part of geometry. To put it in an analogy, a triangle is to geometry like a verb is to a wonderful novel.
The geometry described in this book is far from what is presented in junior and senior high school textbooks. Mathematician Jordan Ellenberger, author of "Devil's Math", leads us on a broad journey of exploration. The ultimate meaning of the journey is: by discovering the power of geometry, we can better think about every real problem and re-understand the world around us.
How many holes does a straw have? What is the winning strategy for the game of Nim? How are public and private keys generated for cryptocurrency transactions? What can we do to prevent a pandemic from ravaging the world? Why is it that artificial intelligence is so good at learning to play chess, but so bad at learning to read a sentence? Can the ancient Greek golden ratio be used to predict stock market trends? If your children really want to learn how to think, what should they learn in school? All of these questions are related to geometry, for sure.
The word "geometry" originally meant "measuring the world", but after a long process of development, its meaning is all-encompassing and can explain the operating mechanism of everything in the world. In this book, geometry becomes closer to the modern world. It can answer important questions about politics, society, data, technology, the universe and other fields, and is closely related to us who live in the "geometric city".
When you open this book, you will be amazed at the great power of geometry and cannot put it down.
