The year 1644 was the Jiashen year. According to the calendar, it was the 17th year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty, the first year of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty, and the first year of Yongchang in the Dashun regime.
On March 19 of that year, the Dashun Army conquered Beijing, and Emperor Chongzhen Zhu Youjian hanged himself to death; on the same day, the Dashun Emperor Li Zicheng entered Beijing, and the Ming Dynasty fell. In just two or three months, the Dashun regime quickly took over the entire Yellow River Basin and part of the Yangtze River Basin with its military power and popular support. The Qing army took over the areas outside the Great Wall, forming a situation where the Dashun regime and the Qing regime were separated by the Great Wall. The remnant forces of the Ming Dynasty still occupied a large area, and half of the country south of the Yangtze River and Huai River was still under the rule of officials at all levels appointed by the Ming Dynasty. They regarded themselves as orthodox, and later they attacked each other over who should be the new emperor, which laid a hidden danger for the Southern Ming regime...
In short, since this year, Chinese history has been filled with major events of sudden changes and waves, and staged scenes of moving and thrilling scenes. And the three hostile regimes represented by the three chronologies also began their struggle for the Central Plains...

Gu Cheng (1934-2003), former professor of the History Department of Beijing Normal University, doctoral supervisor, contemporary historian, expert on Ming and Qing history, author of History of the Peasant War in the Late Ming Dynasty and History of the Southern Ming Dynasty, both of which are works of the highest academic level in the field of Ming and Qing history research.
