Introduction · · · · · ·
This is a popular science picture book that introduces how science changes human life. The book selects ten scientific fields, including space, wheels, numbers, and light. Ten sub-fields are selected for each field according to the historical path and importance, and a total of 100 great scientific discoveries that have changed mankind are introduced. From the ancient predecessors drawing star maps, to modern scientists developing electricity, to the popularization of modern nanomaterials, readers can feel the pursuit of mankind to create a better life, and can deeply appreciate the great significance of science to mankind.
Editor's Recommendation:
What would life be like if we lived in a world without machines, medicine, or electricity?
750,000 years ago, humans had not yet invented simple machines.
In 460 BC, Hippocrates had just established the basic principles of modern medicine.
Alternating current was not discovered until the 1880s.
The situations we can only imagine today were actually experienced by people in the past.
Everything that is commonplace in our lives today did not exist originally.
In order to solve problems, improve conditions and create a better life, human beings are constantly exploring on the road of science. Many great scientific achievements were discovered and created in this exploration.
This book selects ten scientific fields, including space, wheels, numbers, and light. Ten topics are selected in each field according to their historical path and importance, and a total of 100 great discoveries that have changed mankind are introduced. Readers can clearly feel that they are the reasons for the earth-shaking changes in human life, and they are also great witnesses of human beings' diligent pursuit and exploration of science. This is also the most important message that this book wants to convey to readers.
The material selection and arrangement of this book are scientific and reasonable. The ten major scientific fields basically cover all aspects of modern human life, allowing readers to understand comprehensive scientific knowledge. The sub-topics in each major field are selected in chronological and logical order. There is a gradual internal connection between the sub-topics, and the development and evolution of the entire scientific field are presented in a unified manner. For example, in the field of "space", the first sub-topic introduces that in 4000 BC, the ancient Egyptians began to draw star maps. The following topics successively introduce the use of celestial spheres to record time, the use of the starry sky for navigation positioning, and the understanding of the position of the earth in the universe.
The book is lively and vivid. The illustrations by Chinese artist Du Yukai are unique and colorful. The image of a female scientist who travels through ancient and modern times runs through the whole book, and the layout design is flexible. The perfect combination of pictures and texts makes readers not feel bored while reading, and they can even be surprised to find interesting details in the illustrations.
100 great scientific discoveries have brought about earth-shaking changes in human life. Human beings have never stopped pursuing creation, and science has never stopped advancing.
◇Foreign media and readers' comments◇
Gillespie selected 10 scientific fields with breakthroughs, including space, wheels, medicine, and energy. Du Yukai used bright blue and orange tones and low-key cartoon illustrations to create a sense of history and clearly present the scientific process, such as how power plants produce electricity. The illustrations make the text concepts easier to understand.
——Publishers Weekly
This book is divided into 10 areas, explaining the evolution of different concepts in scientific development, such as how simple machines and wheels were gradually used in water wheels and wind power plants... The text is like the history of science, with pleasing visual effects, and the format is relatively large. School libraries will consider purchasing it.
