Description
Introduction
In this prestigious classic, architectural historian David Watkin traces the history of Western architecture from the earliest Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt to the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque, neoclassicism, the Art Nouveau movement, modernism, and the postmodern style of the 21st century. The architects involved include Brunelleschi, Michelangelo, Raphael, Bernini, Schinkel, Mackintosh, Peter Behrens, Le Corbusier, Frank Gehry, etc. Through many buildings and masters in the long river of history, the author reveals the continued vitality of classical architectural language, such as the architectural style of ancient Greece, and the architectural veins that run through the works of McKim, Mead and White in New York around 1900.
This book has a comprehensive and in-depth perspective, the text is popular and professional, and it is illustrated. It tells the complete story of Western architecture from the beginning to modern times, and has a separate chapter for new developments in the 21st century. The content involves computers and architecture, as well as sustainability and environmental issues, and is of vital importance to the development of contemporary architectural design.
